Inmates Allegedly Scam IRS, By Filling For Taxes!!

|

A federal grand jury has issued an indictment charging four members of a Key West family with leading a scheme that had Monroe County inmates filing false tax returns on behalf of themselves, their friends and family members, reports KeysNet.com.

One of the family members is Gilbert Suarez, who used to be Key West's director of public works. He pleaded guilty in 2006 to stealing more than $200,000 in quarters from parking meters -- and received probation, according to KeysNet.com.

The Suarez family members, along with up to 50 inmates, allegedly hauled in as much as $100,000 after filing for about $1 million in refunds for tax years 2004 through 2006, prosecutors say.

The investigators taped one of the inmates, Shawn Clarke, during the investigation. He said, "I'm through with the street crime. I'm strictly white collar from now on. I love the IRS."
