Oh My Gowd: Woman found living with skeleton, believed to be her mother

|

They say everyone has a skeleton in their closet, but this south Fort Myers woman was living with a real one.

Lee County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a request to make a well-being check on 61-year-old Gail Andrews. When they arrived, they found Andrews was living in what are described as "deplorable" conditions.

So they called the Florida Department of Children & Families to investigate the situation.

After learning the mother could be missing, deputies got a search warrant and found a skeleton, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities believe the skeleton is that of Gladys Andrews, Gail's mother, reports the Fort Myers News-Press.

Neighbors hadn't seen Gail's mother for years.

They had long suspected Gail’s sick, bedridden mother had died, but Gail never admitted it, neighbor Peggy Ward told the News-Press.

Another neighbor told the News-Press that Gail liked to take care of animals, considering them her friends, but she took it to an extreme: Rats poured in and out of the windows and made their way to Gail’s car, where they ate groceries she often left in the vehicle.

Foul play is not suspected at this time.

Gladys Andrews was a retired school teacher, according to neighbors.

“It’s a shame that someone would have to die like that,” said Kenny DeGroot, who lives in the house across the street. “I don’t understand it. I don’t know why she wouldn’t get her mother help, ” reports the News-Press.
