A young boy, 10 accidentally shot his older brother in the face, killing him, with their father's handgun.

A 10-year-old boy who police say shot his older brother to death over the weekend was laughing and joking with him moments before the pistol went off, a man who said he witnessed the incident said Monday.

The two boys seemed to be playing around in the cabin of their dad's parked Dodge pickup that Saturday afternoon, recalled Spencer Wayman, 53, who said he was helping unload a moving van across the street in the 700 block of Northeast 41st Street.

He said he saw the younger boy point what looked like a silver gun at his 11-year-old brother, Randy Reddick III.

"Before I could get out of the U-Haul, the gun went off," said Wayman, who heard one gunshot.

The Miami man ran to the truck and saw Reddick lying on the ground in a pool of blood. The boy had been shot in the right side of his face, Wayman said. His brother, whose name the Broward Sheriff's Office has not released because of his age, jumped out of the truck and started yelling.

"It went off by itself!" Wayman said he remembers the boy wailing. "I killed my brother!"

At some point, the boys' sister and father raced out of their apartment and became "hysterical," Wayman said.

Authorities say the shooting was a tragic accident. The father, Randy Reddick Jr., told sheriff's deputies he forgot his pistol was in the truck's unlocked console when he asked his sons to fetch his hat and coat on the front seat, according to a sheriff's report. Reddick, 31, has a valid permit to carry the weapon, state records show.

Homicide detectives will present the findings from their investigation to the State Attorney's Office, sheriff's spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said. Prosecutors will then decide whether or not to file charges.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is looking to see if the children were being adequately supervised, agency spokesman Mark Riordan said.

Reddick identified the gun as a 40-caliber Glock pistol.
