Rhode Island teachers get an 'F' for effort, Central Falls school board voted to fire the teachers!!

Usually, when students don't make the grade, they get an "F." In one Rhode Island district, teachers got the failing grade.

The Central Falls school board voted to fire the teachers after they resisted adding extra duties to their workload without getting much extra pay. Consider this: The average teaching salary in Rhode Island is one of the highest in the country. How many were canned?

But now it seems Superintendent Frances Gallo is willing to compromise. She has agreed to talks with the teachers' union.

As one of the lowest-performing schools in the state, Central Falls High School must choose one of four paths to get federal funding.

Students voiced their support for both the teachers and the superintendent after the firings were announced. President Barack Obama even mentioned the situation in his recent speech on education. Keep reading to find out what's the presidents view of this issue....

The situation in Rhode Island is not unique.

Philadelphia has implemented a similar program to turn around low-performing schools. Houston teachers could lose their jobs if students perform poorly on tests. As an incentive to improve, Houston teachers can get bonuses for students' good performance. Idaho wants to reward students for graduating early. Students around the country are getting cash for good grades.
