Chris Johnson Tops 2,000 Yards Rushing!!!

|

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson has become the sixth man in NFL history to gain at least 2,000 yards rushing in a single season. He topped the mark on a four-yard run against the Seattle Seahawks with just under 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter Sunday. The explosive Johnson appeared to break 2,000 yards a few plays earlier, fittingly, on a 62-yard touchdown run, but it was negated by a holding call...read more for remainder

Johnson finished the game, a 17-13 Tennessee win, with 134 yards on 36 carries, giving him 2,006 yards for the season. That landed him 99 yards shy of the all-time single-season record of 2,105 yards, which was set in 1984 by the Los Angeles Rams' Eric Dickerson.

The other players to run for more than 2,000 yards in a season:

• Jamal Lewis, 2,066 yards, 2003, Baltimore Ravens

• Barry Sanders, 2,053 yards, 1997, Detroit Lions

• Terrell Davis, 2,008 yards, 1998, Denver Broncos

• O.J. Simpson, 2,003 yards (in just 14 games), 1973, Buffalo Bills

Johnson also broke a record earlier in the game. When he surpassed 2,429 yards from scrimmage for the season (yards rushing and receiving combined), he broke Marshall Faulk's NFL record, which was set in 1999. Johnson reached that milestone on a nine-yard reception with roughly nine minutes left in the second quarter. He finished the season with 2,509 yards from scrimmage.

Sunday also marked the 11th straight game -- and 12th overall -- where he topped 100 yards rushing in a game, tying Marcus Allen for the second-longest streak of 100-yard games. Barry Sanders holds the record with 14. And if that weren't enough, he also topped Earl Campbell's franchise record for rushing yards in a season. Campbell ran for 1,934 yards as a Houston Oiler in 1980.

The Titans can't make the playoffs, but 2009-10 will certainly be remembered as a special season because of what Chris Johnson's been able to do.
